Description:

The Anderson Center for the Arts is located on the campus of Binghamton University, State University of New York. The facility was designed by the architectural firm of Hutchins, Evans and Lefferts of New York City and opened in 1985.

The complex is designed to meet the needs of every performing group -- soloists, chamber ensembles, symphonies, dance, or large theatrical productions complemented by a full-scale orchestra. The University's Fine Arts complex, which house the Anderson Center for the Arts, provides additional spaces for the academic departments in the form of two studio theaters and the Jean Casadesus Recital Hall used by the Theater and Music Departments, respectively. This combination of small studios and large theaters creates a versatile setting that is both intimate and spectacular, integrating music, dance, drama, and the visual arts, while serving the academic needs of the University as well as the region.

Light from numerous glass panels permeates the foyer where rust and terra cotta colors blend with neutral tones to recapture the warm red of the exterior brick walls. The glass panels form a structure unique to the Anderson Center-a retractable wall at the back of the large Osterhout Concert Theater. To afford a special summer evening experience for hundreds of people, this sliding glass wall opens onto a sloping knoll, a man-made amphitheater extension to the Osterhout Concert Theater, provided with its own sound equipment to enhance open-air listening. When the glass wall is retracted, the interior acoustic wall separating the Osterhout Concert Theater from the lobby area can be moved manually to give the outdoor audience a view of the stage.

Description:

Back in 1997, as the century wound to a close, CyberCafe West was born. Established by prolonged whimsy, the Café took root in a building that was built in the beginning of that old century. Between the tin ceiling and tile floor, the café’s character emerged. A touch of the new and a taste of the old. Eclectic by both choice and necessity. But beneath style and façade, the café, at its core, is built on the belief that everything should be more than it is. Not in some “Be all you can be” sense, but in the Looking Glass sense of "Be what you would seem to be." - Humpty Dumpty to Alice. That in this sleepy city of Binghamton, we can ignite the creative forces with in us all. Whether in just our words to our friends or ourselves, or in the talented musicians and poets that have and will grace the Café’s stage. It’s also a pretty good place to eat and drink. Hope to see you soon!

Description:

History of the Park Prior to being a park, the property was primarily farmland, owned by Abel Bennett, the former first mayor of Binghamton, along with three smaller parcels owned by others. In a stunning act of generosity and foresight, these parcels, totaling eighteen acres in all, were purchased by George F. Johnson, the founder of Endicott-Johnson Shoe Corp., and then gifted to the City of Binghamton in October 1921. At a time when a working person made perhaps $2,000 per year, Johnson wrote in a letter to the current mayor of Binghamton that he paid $100,000 for the property, "a price which seemed to me reasonable." Remarkably, he also pledged an additional donation of $25,000, "to be expended as soon as possible for improvements." The only condition of this gift of property was "that it shall remain forever a public park, and that it shall be properly improved and maintained by the city as such. If at any time this property shall be used for any other purpose, it shall revert to the giver, his heirs or assigns." Also included was a list of "suggestions" he requested to be carried out, if considered "fair and reasonable, and so far as practical." The improvements came in short order. The crown jewel, the Herschell carousel, added in 1925, has delighted children for generations now (including the world-renowned playwright, Rod Serling, who lived his boyhood years on the West Side). The bathhouse, which once had a red tile roof, still serves its patrons. The bandstand, now restored, hosts concerts in the summertime. The reflecting pool and its sculpture, Boy with Fish, were restored in 2004 (the latter by the Binghamton University art department through a grant from the Rose-Ross University and Community Projects Fund). In the early days of the park, a giant wooden toboggan slide was situated at the Laurel Avenue side but ultimately burned. These structures formed the basic amusements of the park, as we know it today. The oak grove, which has matured into the green canopy we see today, offers shade to those seeking relief from the sun. All of these have survived the last eighty years, yet they were nearly lost to neglect until recently. By the 1980's, the park was in serious disrepair; the legend of its creation had faded. In the 1986 Heritage Committee Special Report, written by a task force that reviewed the park and made recommendations, members lamented that the park "has primarily changed only in the form of falling into such a state of disrepair that renovation is no longer cost efficient." Residents, realizing that a great treasure was about to be lost, pressed for restoration of these structures. From then, until the present, much time, effort, and money have been spent to restore the park structures to a functional and pristine condition. Today, in addition to serving the needs of the residents in the surrounding neighborhood, the Park hosts nationally known and local events such as the Chris Thater Memorial Races, the USTA Challenger Tournament, the Lee E. Barta Remembrance Run, and the Recreation Park Music Festival. (westsidebinghamton.com/recpark.html)

Description:

Standing alone on the West Side, The Belmar, with its large, faded red-orange sign mounted prominently over its front door, has been a favorite watering hole for locals, college students and even an assortment of actors and actresses over a long history stretching back to the early 1950s.

Eva Gabor, Red Buttons, Veronica Lake and Jackie Cooper are a few of the celebrities who frequented the Belmar, said Dale Skrabalak, son of longtime owner Stanley Skrabalak. The elder Skrabalak, with his late wife, Helen, owned and operated the West Side landmark for 43 years, before selling the bar at 95 Main St. in 1995.

The Belmar has been owned and operated by Edward Hickey Jr. and his son, Edward Hickey III, since 1997. The Hickeys retained much of the bar's unique character. They continue to serve local residents as well as a growing college crowd.

The Hickeys have kept as much as possible of Skrabalak's unique interior decor, which includes the bar's tufted vinyl ceiling and recessed lighting above a curved bar inside a dark, comfortable setting.

The Belmar also was a well-known haunt for John "Fitzie" D. Fitzgibbons, a local legend who had a long history promoting Irish music, festivals and bars in the area. Known for his tweed cap and pipe, Fitzgibbons died in October 2002.

The juke box still has a varied list of Irish tunes.
